Sun, Sand & Soapweed

The sun hangs in a cloudless sky
and the sand shimmers with the heat.
It's summertime in the Sandhills
and there's nowhere you can retreat.

Even the sharp soapweed spears sag,
taproots seeking water below.
The grass is turning brown again
beneath the summer sun's hot glow.

Forgotten is the growth of spring
and winter's snow is months away...
it's just sun, sand and the soapweed,
surviving, waiting for that day.

Although the summer sun is high
the Sandhills are resting a bit
dormant 'til winter's moisture comes
to bring a renewed life to it.
